Fast CPU - Lackluster Graphics

It's quite fast and responsive thanks to the T8100 "Penryn" CPU from Intel, which is one of the latest and greatest of Intel's Core 2 Duo notebook processors. It's built on a smaller 45nm technology that performs even better and more efficiently, without increasing power consumption and heat. Our test unit came with integrated Intel X3100 graphics, which is one of the worst possible choices for anyone looking to play games. It works fine for office applications, however, and as long as you don't use any 3D apps or games it provides some added battery life. Alternatively, you could fork over a little extra and get the 8410 outfitted with a dedicated Nvidia 8400M GPU instead of the Intel GMA.

Asus G50VT

Dedicated gaming laptops are not that common, and for good reason; the hardware required to play high-end games takes up a fair amount of space, the components require more power - resulting in shorter battery life, and they are usually very pricey. Our review sample however, is an exception to the last rule, as it's the Best Buy edition of the Asus G50vt - more specifically named G50 VT-X1.

It's equipped with a somewhat slower Core 2 Duo processor than the regular model and you will have to settle for one hard drive instead of two, but it still has the most important component from a gamer's perspective, and that would of course be the Nvidia 9800M graphics card.

At 7.3 pounds, the G50 is quite heavy for a 15" laptop, but considering that most laptops with these specs come in 17-inch frames, it's actually a "thin and light" gaming laptop (relatively speaking).

If the funky patterns and LED lights aren't enough to hint at this being a gaming laptop, the "Republic of Gamers" logo might. For some the design might stand out a bit too much, but it clearly has a lot of personality.

Although the aesthetic design is quite impressive, picking up the laptop isn�t quite impressive. The laptop weighs in at a massive 10 pounds, which will either break your back or enlarge your biceps.

Summary and Information

This stylish laptop with a brushed metal look should be quite durable, as it meets the U.S. military standard for high temperatures, vibration, dust, humidity and altitude. HP is also pushing for its scratch-resistant DuraFinish treatment, which protects the palm rest, touchpad and display cover areas.

Inside the EliteBook 6930p is some solid and customizable hardware including Intel Centrino 2 processors and shock-mounted hard drives. Graphics power is provided by an (optional) ATI Mobility Radeon 3450 with 128 or 256MB of dedicated memory.

We haven't reviewed the Sony VAIO Z laptop yet - the following is a summary based on the hardware in the VAIO Z series.

Summary and Information

The VAIO Z series is one of Sony's premium ultraportable series, and is priced accordingly. Like most VAIOs it comes with a little extra, such as a high-resolution 'X-BRITE' LED-lit screen, a Blu-Ray player and dedicated graphics.

It's neither the thinnest or lightest laptop, like for instance the MacBook Air or the Lenovo X301, but makes up for it by using more powerful hardware. For example, the VAIO Z is equipped with the regular, higher clocked Core 2 Duo's, whereas its thinner competition use low-voltage CPUs. It even has a dedicated graphics card to help with the HD media playback and provide some light gaming capability, which is unusual in this weight category.

An optional upgrade that should make this laptop incredibly fast is the dual-SSD RAID configuration. This gives it almost double the performance of the already fast and completely silent Solid State Drive technology. Coincidentally, it also doubles the price tag - but hey, if you want the fastest laptop on the planet, I'm sure you don't expect it to be cheap.

Panel PC in 17"/19" Model

Today there are so many features on laptops. For most businesses they simple need a good laptop that works for a long period of time and at a great low price. So when they look at laptops they see units that are almost exactly the same with huge price differences. Many upgrades and things in the laptop world simply are not logical and not needed. I will talk about many of them and tell you the secret to finding the best prices.

For example 250 GB hard drives are fairly new, and 320GB laptop hard drives are still very rare. The standard is a 160GB hard drive. The larger hard drive, can ad 100-200 dollars to the price of the laptop, for just a bit more space. The average business customer uses less than 40GB of space so it is crazy to pay extra for this space.

One thing that you should know about laptops is that all laptops sold are really only made by 7 companies, and all of these companies are Chinese. Every brand you see is really a laptop from one of these companies branded with the company logo. Dell uses 5 of these 7 companies. Because of this you will notice laptops from different brands that look exactly the same, you will also notice laptops from the same brands that look totally different. The only one of these makers that sells laptops direct is Acer, but their laptops are usually very low quality and it is usually better to pay a bit more for better quality.

Keyboard Napkins: To Keep Your Laptop Clean

Sometimes such simple ideas amaze me. This keyboard napkin is a concept design, but I think it should be passed to napkin companies at once! This is the best idea to protect your laptop keyboard from greasy fingers , soft drink spills, and cookies leftovers making its way through your keyboard buttons. 

You simply stick the napkin on the surface of your laptop keyboard by pulling off the 2 plastic strips from the sides. Then after you get done typing, you wipe your hands and mouth with it and trash it .... and get another one!
